Julie Lumeng, M.D., Confirmed as Medical School Associate Dean for Research

Julie LumengOn July 16, 2020, Julie Lumeng, M.D., was confirmed by the U-M Regents in an appointment as an Associate Dean for Research for the Medical School. In this role, she will also serve as the Executive Director for the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICHR). Dr. Lumeng will report to Steven Kunkel, Ph.D., Executive Vice Dean for Research of the Medical School and Chief Scientific Officer for Michigan Medicine.

Dr. Lumeng is a tenured Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical School and Professor of Nutritional Sciences in the School of Public Health. She has been the Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics, as well as the Director of the Center for Human Growth and Development and a member of MICHR’s faculty cabinet.

As an Associate Dean, she will be a member of the Medical School Office of Research leadership team, working to shape the broader vision for the Medical School’s clinical research enterprise, as well as advise on enterprise-wide policies, procedures, and operations. Dr. Lumeng’s responsibilities will include:

  • Executive Director of MICHR.
  • Co-Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Clinical Translational Sciences Award (CTSA), which is up for renewal.
  • Coordination of the clinical research enterprise, in partnership with the Assistant Deans for Research and the following units: Clinical Trials Support Office, the Michigan Clinical Research Unit, the Calendar Review & Analysis Office, and IRBMED.
  • Partnering with Investigational Drug Services to facilitate high-quality, timely support
  • of clinical research across key Michigan Medicine locations.
  • Facilitating collaboration among the Medical School Office of Research units and university stakeholders, such as UMOR and ORSP.
  • Ensuring that clinical research is integrated with Michigan Medicine’s strategy at ambulatory sites and state-wide affiliates.

In addition to her new role at the Medical School, Dr. Lumeng also received a five-year appointment on central campus in UMOR as Assistant Vice President for Research – Clinical and Human Subjects Research.

“Julie will help the Medical School Office of Research in developing and executing a strategic vision to facilitate clinical and translational investigations across the research spectrum,” notes Dr. Kunkel. “Ultimately, her expertise will reinforce the U-M biomedical enterprise as a global leader in research and patient care.”
