Route Map for New Research Faculty

July 6, 2022
New Research Faculty Route MapThe Medical School Office of Research recently launched the New Research Faculty Route Map, a web tool that offers helpful hints specifically tailored to researchers new to U-M. The Route Map points to resources such as the New Faculty Orientation video, an orientation checklist, a research onboarding checklist, and more – all organized to help new researchers more easily navigate their first days here at the top research public university in the country.

Created in collaboration with team members from the Medical School Office of Faculty Development and the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, the new tool is similar to the widely-used Research Project Route Map. The New Research Faculty Route Map provides “stations” that highlight the major tasks or resources new researchers will encounter. In addition to onboarding and orientation, stations take a closer look at:

  • Laboratory Commissioning and Safety
  • Training
  • Procurement
  • IT & Data
  • Cores
  • Lab Staffing

“Those early days at a university the size of U-M can be overwhelming for a researcher,” notes Teri Grieb, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Research Strategy and Senior Director for Research.  “The New Research Faculty Route Map helps new team members sort through what can often seem like information overload, zeroing in on those resources that can be the most helpful as they begin their research journey here at Michigan Medicine.”
