Research Development

Research Development team members within the Medical School Office of Research design and implement services that help faculty become successful in obtaining and maintaining extramural funding and — once successful — share their expertise to help their colleagues do the same. Faculty members are encouraged to contact us for assistance with pre-award activities related to finding funding opportunities and to proposal development and editing.
HOW RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT SUPPORTS RESEARCH

The R01 Boot Camp — part of Michigan Medicine's Strategic Research Initiative — is a 10-month, multi-tiered, proposal development program, in which early career faculty work in small groups with senior faculty coaches to prepare a competitive NIH R01 grant proposal.

We offer proposal samples, free in-house proposal editing, proposal preparation funding, assistance with development of large proposals, and lists of freelance writers and graphic designers. Plus our Academic Writing and Research Development Series features periodic articles that address topics that are currently top-of-mind for our research community.

We coordinate internal competitions for limited submission grants to foundations; all opportunities are hosted on the Medical School Competition Space. We also manage the bridging funding program via the Biomedical Research Council (BMRC), which helps support continuity of faculty research between large grants.

Michigan Research Experts offers more than 5,000 faculty profiles covering many schools, colleges, and institutes across U-M. Use the database to find researchers with specific areas of expertise for collaboration or mentoring, explore co-author networks, and connect with colleagues across the preeminent U-M research enterprise to expand your research network.
