Research Intelligence & Analytics

Research Intelligence and Analytics (RIA) is a unit of the Medical School Office of Research. Our primary mission is to provide strategic decision support for Medical School’s research mission through the execution of complex data-driven investigations, often in collaboration with internal and external partners. Our work spans from retrospective financial analysis to competitive intelligence to predictive models of future impact.

Our team seeks to offer better insight into the research enterprise. As one of the first units of our kind in the world, RIA leverages advanced statistical modeling, artificial intelligence/machine learning, and the ever-growing availability of big data to tailor accurate, precise, and meaningful intelligence solutions to administrators and faculty leaders.

We pride ourselves on the translation of our findings into easily accessible presentations and interactive visualizations. In past years, we have created and implemented bespoke operations dashboards for a number of service units within the Medical School, emphasizing measures of quality, efficiency and effectiveness.

Mapping the ever-changing network of research interests and scientific investigations is vitally important to the research enterprise. As the scope and scale of science continues to increase, the creation of multidisciplinary teams are necessary to effectively pursue the most innovative and impactful discoveries. One of our contributions to this area has been the implementation of the Michigan Research Experts network: An interactive tool designed to allow faculty from across the university to find one another based on shared interests, regardless of discipline, and to collaborate in new and meaningful ways. The novel social networks created at the University of Michigan support our investigators throughout their careers.
